29 Movies have surpassed the one billion dollar mark at the Box Office. Have you seen them all?

Beauty and the Beast

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is the newest film to surpass the $1 billion mark. It is currently in theaters and could climb this list depending on how long it remains in theaters.

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight is the best Batman movie of all-time. It may also be the best superhero movie of all-time. Heath Ledger’s death was a huge, although tragic, boost in marketing for this film, but it is definitely worthy of making this list.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit was not up to par with The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It did, however, make a lot of money off of the huge success of the previous films in the series. This actually, probably, would have been a great film if it wasn’t stretched into a trilogy.

Zootopia is one of the best animated movies of recent years. Did it deserve to make this much money? Maybe not, but it is entertaining and worth the watch.

Alice in Wonderland

How did this movie make so much money? Of all the films on the list this is the most surprising. When a sequel was announced I was surprised, though, now that I see this movie made so much money they had to make a sequel.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

The long wait for a Star Wars sequel was enough to guarantee huge profits for The Phantom Menace. The movie may not have been what Star Wars’ fans were hoping for, but the short-comings of the film weren’t enough to keep it off this list.

Finding Dory

Another sequel long in the making. Finding Dory followed a similar path as Finding Nemo (like many of the sequel on this list) and with so few children’s movies these days it seems any children’s film worth watching is making hundreds of millions of dollars; if not billions.

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park is a classic monster movie. Due to the fact that they used visual effects instead of CGI this movie still holds up. It also brought a truly terrifying T-Rex to the big screen and resulted in a huge payday.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Of all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies this may be the worst. However, due to the success and fandom of the previous entries this movie was set up to make a lot of money regardless. Somehow it surpassed the billion dollar mark. This is a series that will just keep going until it stops making truckloads of money.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Again, it is pretty full-proof is Star Wars is in the title of your movie. Rogue One, like any Star Wars sequel, was destined to make a lot of money. It was also entertaining enough to surpass the billion dollar mark.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Just like Stranger Tides, Dead Man’s Chest brought in huge audiences off of the success of the previous films. Curse of the Black Pearl is the best of the films and should be on this list, but unfortunately it seems sequels are more likely to make this list.

Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3 was another long-awaited sequel. It made money off of nostalgia and new generation of Buzz and Woody fans. This movie is pretty deep for a kids movie and is, by far, the best kid’s movie on this list.

The Dark Knight Rises

After the huge success of The Dark Knight this film was a guaranteed success. Like others on this list it’s predecessor deserves to be higher on the list, but somehow the sequel made more at the Box Office.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

No Transformers movie belongs on this list. No wonder they are still making these movies. Seriously, how is this movie on this list?

Casino Royal is the best of the new Bond films. Skyfall is second best of the new series and one of the best action films on this list. If Casino Royal isn’t on the list at least Skyfall made it and not Spectre or Quantum of Solace.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Return of the King is the best of The Lord of the Rings movies. It is the best adventure movie on this list and deserves the money it made in the Box Office.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Seriously? Another Transformers movie? The first one was entertaining, but how did these movies make this much money?

Captain America: Civil War

The Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue to make this list. They are making some great superhero movies and doing a great job of keeping fans excited and interested. Civil War isn’t the best of the MCU movies, but Marvel has done a great job of turning things around and they deserve this success.

This movie, along with others on this list, have been helped largely by the lack of children’s movies. Minions is entertaining and built on the success of Despicable Me, but it really isn’t a billion dollar movie.

Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3 is my favorite of the Iron Man trilogy. It had a huge Box Office boost thanks to the huge success of the first Iron Man movie and the build-up of the entire MCU.

Frozen was a world-wide phenomenon for almost a year. This movie stayed in theaters forever and made tons of money off of re-releases of sing-along versions. Parents are probably rejoicing that “Let it Go” has now taken a backseat to something new.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

The culmination of the Harry Potter series was a great movie and fans just couldn’t let go. This movie made its money for two reasons. First, Harry Potter is a huge brand and the movie was going to make money. Second, fans weren’t ready to let go and I personally know many people that saw this movie multiple times in the theaters.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

The second Avengers film was another huge success for Marvel. The Infinity War movies will likely make this list as well. Not to mention Marvel’s take on Spider-man this summer and the second Civil War movie. Marvel Studios is just rolling in money right now.

Furious 7

The Fast and Furious franchise finally decided to start making okay movies. This film, though, became huge after the passing of Paul Walker. Like Heath Ledger’s death, the tragic death of Walker helped to propel this movie to being a huge Box Office success. It would have made plenty of money regardless, but that event moved this film into billion dollar territory.

The Avengers

The first Avengers film was a huge success. Fans were excited to see the characters come together in the first collaboration. Marvel did a great job of introducing characters in standalone films and then bringing them together. Take notes DC.

Jurassic World

Another long-awaited sequel to make the list. Jurassic World used a very similar formula as Jurassic Park, but fans didn’t seem to mind. Jurassic World 2 will hit theaters in 2018 and could make its way onto this list as well.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Like Jurassic World, The Force Awakens was a long-awaited sequel that used a similar formula as it’s predecessor. The Force Awakens is very similar to A New Hope, but, again, having Star Wars in the title is enough to make a lot of money. Also, despite being similar The Force Awakens is very entertaining and the sequel may very well make this list as well.

Titanic took a tragic accident and built it into a love-story. Kind of like the horrid Pearl Harbor movie. Leonardo DiCaprio was propelled to stardom by this film and director James Cameron only directed it to get the studio to finance an exploration of the sunken ship. Titanic may be despised by many men out there, but for a cliched love story it made a lot of money, which is the point of Hollywood.

I never got the hype with Avatar. It looked cool and was a pretty good movie, but it made almost $3 billion at the Box Office. Some people went insane over this movie, but it was just like any other adventure movie.

Somehow they still haven’t pumped out a sequel, but it is in the works. How do you not get a sequel out for a movie that makes this much money?

They did create an Avatar theme park area at Disney though so maybe the hype is still alive.
